We celebrate the lives of seniors!

Everyday we celebrate the lives of the seniors living in Broome and the surrounding counties of upstate New York through recreation, health and educational programs. With volunteer opportunities, social events and trips, we have something for everyone.

We are proud to be a member-supported, not-for-profit community-oriented organization. We continue our commitment as a trendsetter in programs and services for adults. Please join us!

Mission Statement

Johnson City Senior Center is a non-profit community organization that provides socialization, recreational, educational and nutritional programs that empower adults to optimize their health, wellness and quality of life. Johnson City Senior Center is committed to its leadership role in programming and is continually evolving to meet the needs of our community.

Building a Healthy Lifestyle at the Johnson City Senior Center

JCSC will be addressing preventative health services for the purpose of encouraging healthy behavior in seniors. The center offers healthy eating, physical exercise, mental awareness activities, and socialization to support this initiative. Healthy eating and physical activity are important for seniors in order to prevent the development and progression of chronic diseases. As one ages, exercise can help prevent health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. By building muscle mass and focusing on better balance, seniors can help reduce the risk of falls and broken bones.

Seniors are vulnerable to depression which can be triggered by loss of independence, isolation and the loss of family and friends. Depression can lead to physical stress as well, causing a decline in their overall health. By taking an active role in an appropriate exercise class, meditation session for depression, or a class on proper nutrition, a senior would attain a healthier lifestyle.

Johnson City Senior Center will broaden the exercise, nutritional wellness education and socialization sessions by forming an additional bond with elder health agencies in the area. These opportunities will increase the daily participation in current classes, meals and counseling, creating new memberships to levels that the center has not reached in the past. A long term goal would be to improve and maintain mental awareness among seniors, in turn decreasing early signs of dementia and the more progressive Alzheimer disease. By decreasing depression, social isolation or loss of mental awareness, seniors will interact and live more meaningful lives. These and more success stories, along with exercise and proper nutrition classes, seniors would lead better physical health.

By creating a more comprehensive awareness of the Center in the area, and the value of the programs offered, JCSC would be noted as a leader in preventive health care.
