Information about the Johnson City Senior Center
Because the Johnson City Senior Center is a community focal point for services, members are able to receive information and education for a variety of health concerns. We provide programs that encourage preventive health care, health care services, nutritious hot meals and physical activity. We offer: Health Education classes, blood pressure and glucose screenings, exercise through Line Dancing, Tai-Chi and Yoga, daily nutrition program, health insurance counseling, TOPS – Take Off Pounds Sensibly, eye glass repair and checks, Senior Housing Fair, hearing screenings and immunizations.
The Johnson City Senior Center plays an important role in the lives of many of the elders of this community by fulfilling many of their social and emotional needs. We do this through holiday parties, travel, Bingo, knitting and crocheting, quilting, billiards, shuffleboard, card games and specialty craft classes. Intellectual needs are met through a variety of educational opportunities such as; college classes with Broome Community College, special interest lectures, Asset Protection Series, Stock Market Education, Computer Classes, Senior Defensive Driving, Guitar lessons, Oil and Watercolor Painting, Round Table Conversations with local politicians and Public Hearings.
As a visible symbol of society’s concern of older persons, the Johnson City Senior Center helps older persons deal with the changing aspects of their everyday lives. Our center supports the independence of our members and encourages their involvement in the community thereby enhancing their dignity and increasing the quality of their later years. We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities and community involvement: RSVP opportunities, volunteer opportunities within the senior center with over 14,000 hours of volunteer time to the center itself. At the senior center, our chorus, cooperative volunteer opportunities with Johnson City High School, tax preparation, voting site, Legal Aid will preparation, building use for other local non-profits and the Johnson City Holiday parade with doughnuts and hot chocolate for all participants, offer our members time to be involved in our center and their community.
Information about our Board of Directors
As a private, not for profit organization we are governed by a Board of Directors. As written in the by-laws, this volunteer board is composed of a minimum 50% members age 55 or older and is elected to serve three year terms, serving no more than three consecutive terms. Each board member is appointed by the Board Chair to serve on a minimum of one of the following committees: Executive, Finance, Future Planning, Personnel and Policies, Property and Maintenance, Nominating, Program and Trip committees.
We have 14 board members who each bring a unique perspective to their service to our senior center. We have men and women with careers and experience ranging from finance and engineering to architecture and corporate work. We also have members of the non-profit and health communities serving us as well. As diverse as they are, their commonality is in their commitment to our center. They faithfully come to monthly meetings and are serious about our future and growth. As we all do, they believe in our mission and place in this community.
Our Board of Directors make themselves available to listen to our center’s participants’ thoughts and respond to their needs.
Board meetings are held every month throughout the year except during August and December. Annual Board Elections are held in April each year.
